Peacemaking
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God". (Matt. 5:9)
We do our Lord’s work when we minister to others in need. This continues to be the primary focus of our Mission Commission. However we are also called to address root cause issues that cause human suffering, so we undertake activities in the pursuit of peace and justice. The PC-USA web site (www.pcusa.org/peacemaking), tells that peace (shalom) is God’s gift and intention (Lev. 26:6, Num 6:26, Jer. 29.11 et al). But peace is not to be passively awaited but actively pursued (Ps. 34:14). This theme is reinforced in the New Testament and includes specific mention of striving for good relations among peoples and nations (Mk. 9:50, Rom. 12:18-19, Eph. 2:15, Heb. 12:14). Towards this end we have chosen to focus on interfaith and intercultural dialogue and understanding, acknowledging the notion that "An enemy is one whose story we have not heard." (Gene Knudsen-Hoffman, expert in conflict resolution).
