What would I do if I were a child in the 3 year olds’ class
What would I do if I were a child in the 3 year olds’ class?

One of Mrs. D’Elia’s favorite units in the 3 year olds’ class focuses on Noah’s Ark. The children spend several days playing with, talking about, and creating projects that relate to the story and connected concepts, including…

…making a list of all the animals on the Ark

…creating The Noah's ark art project: blue finger paint for the water, the construction paper ark, the animal cracker animals and painting the rainbow...

…talking and ”writing” about the story: “What two animals went on the ark?” and “what do you have two of?”....

… playing Noah's Ark freeze dance: pictures of the animals are out on the
floor and the children have to jump on a specific animal when the music stops…

… working with Rainbows...painting a rainbow, learning  rainbow songs, reading rainbow stories, playing with the parachute, using rainbow sticks, using rainbow crayons and pencils, and making a chain of rainbow colors....

… experimenting with the “Sink or Float” test: each child gets a turn to place
something in the tub of water to test if the seven or so objects will sink or
float.

All of these activities connect to the traditional story, and help the three year olds learn important concepts in developmentally appropriate ways:  animals, counting, colors, creative arts, sinking and floating, exercise, singing, communicating ideas and listening to stories.
