This marks the beginning of the holy season of Lent. The season of Lent is considered a season of penitence and preparation. Historically people have used this time to prepare to commit their lives to Christ or to rededicate their life as the case may be. In many traditions, including our own, this worship is built around the imposition of Ashes – hence the name "Ash Wednesday." The ashes symbolize one's penitence for failure to be the person we have committed ourselves to be.
